LITTLE WOMEN

Synopsis

Little Women is a universally loved novel by Louisa May Alcott, split over two books after the first novel’s great success. Now it is being brought to the Dorking stage in a brand new adaptation written by Rosita Goldstone. This adaptation is focused on capturing the heart of the book that is so well loved and treasured. The play follows the four March sisters- Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy- on their path to adulthood in 19th century Massachusetts. Their stories focus on love, morality and personal growth; together these sisters support each other through the many ups and downs life has to offer.

Characters

Below are details of the characters in Little Women. The ages are a guide, so please don’t rule yourself out if you are younger or older. The characters all have arcs and the sisters story starts with them as teenage girls and ends with them as adults.

JO MARCH (18-35) Jo is the protagonist of the play. She is headstrong, creative and a tom boy, the “boy” of the sisters. She is a writer and has strong views on everything in life and is not afraid to share them. She shuns convention with a vibrant attitude.

MEG MARCH (18-35) Meg is the oldest March sister and therefore the most sensible. She is very pretty and materialistic and keeps an eye on her sisters, even though she longs for pretty things and the chance to feel rich. She ends up marrying for love and not wealth.

BETH MARCH (16-30) Beth is the quietest of the March girls. She doesn’t have big dreams and enjoys the piano and playing with her dolls. She has a pure heart and a kind outlook. She enjoys a homely existence and gets very sick.

AMY MARCH (16-30) Amy is the youngest sister and changes the most in the play. She starts as a young annoying girl with dreams of being an artist and ends up a mature, clever woman who forges a bright future for herself, despite the odds.

MARMEE MARCH (40 +) Marmee is the mother and is the glue that holds the family together. She loves her girls dearly and is generous in nature, helping those less fortunate whenever she can. She is warm and gently guides her daughters on their paths through life.

THEODORE LAURENCE (18-35) Theodore or Laurie as he is known, is the neighbour to the March girls. They take him in when they see how lonely he is in his grandfathers house. He is shy at first but comes out of his shell and can be cheeky. He falls desperately in love with Jo but after she rejects him sets off to travel the world and find himself.

MR LAURENCE (50+) Mr Laurence is Laurie’s grandfather and looks intimidating. He is wealthy and lives next door to the March’s in a big house. He has a gentle soul which comes out as you get to know him and he is particularly fond of Beth March.

JOHN BROOKE (35+) John is brought in by Mr Laurence to tutor Laurie. He enjoys education, is a sensible man with a good heart but is poor. He falls in love with Meg March and tries to win her affection.

AUNT MARCH (50+) Aunt March is the wealthy aunt of the March’s. She offers to help the March’s by having Jo come and read to her and keep her company, hoping to provide a positive influence on at least one of the girls. She is old fashioned and opinionated and lets everyone know of her disapproval of things on a regular basis.

HANNAH (35+) Hannah is the house keeper for the March’s. She is very close to Marmee and has been with the family for many years. She shows great loyalty to the family and is there through thick and thin.
